Airsoft guns came primarily out of Japan in the early 1980s. The citizens of Japan were looking for firearm replicas they could legally own, either to collect or to use for target practice.
Airsoft guns were the solution and quickly became part of a popular sport as well. Electric Airsoft Guns today are sold around the world and the selection is quite extensive.

As Electric guns became more popular, owners began organizing games of simulated airsoft combat, or skirmishes, in which they would practice with their guns. Although these weapons are capable of projecting BBs at relatively high speeds with excellent accuracy, their ammunition is a non-lethal plastic BB. Airsoft, as a game, continues to grow in popularity, attracting those who enjoy the thrill of simulated armed combat.

In most games, using something that is bigger and better is the norm. Airsoft is no exception to this rule. Automatic, 3 round burst, and semi-automatic operation is possible, which gives these guns the popular name “automatic electric guns” or AEGs. AEGs came into existence to fulfill this need for more stopping power in airsoft combat. Although these guns remain safe to use in a friendly skirmish, they offer higher rates of fire and excellent accuracy. Over the years, they have become the gun type of choice for serious players.

Electric Airsoft Guns typically use a rechargeable airsoft battery to drive an electric motor, which cycles an internal piston or spring assembly to launch pellets. These guns can shoot a BB between 150 and 650 feet per second (fps), and rates of fire of between 100 and 1500 rounds per minute. Electric airsoft guns are the most commonly used and widely available type of airsoft gun.

Many manufacturers have replicated the basic model, adding reinforced parts or minor improvements. These guns are powered primarily by Nickel Metal hydride (NiMH) airsoft batteries with varying voltages and milliampere hour’s ratings. The most common airsoft battery is an 8.4 V large battery (between 2200 and 5000 mAh.) Also available are “mini” and “stick” batteries, which generally have 900 to 1600 mAh capacities. Voltages for NiMH batteries range from 7.2 V, all the way up to 12 V.

The rule of thumb, usually, is the higher the mAh, the longer the battery lasts, and the higher the voltage, the higher Rate of Fire (RoF). Recently, however, Lithium-Polymer, or Li-po, batteries are becoming more popular in the airsoft world. These airsoft batteries can last longer and have higher mAh and Volts while at the same time, being small and light. Li-po batteries are usually at 11.1 V or 7.4 V and at varying mAh from 500 mAh to 6500 mAh.

Electric Airsoft Guns can be externally modified for more effective airsoft combat, such as metal bodies and reinforced plastics that make AEGs look and feel even more realistic. These modifications have become very popular. AEG manufacturers such as Classic Army and Tokyo Marui make Electric Airsoft gun replicas that look nearly identical to their real counterparts. Tokyo Marui, however, sticks with a durable ABS plastic, whereas Classic Army features full metal bodied guns and stronger furnishing.
